When Team Pro-Enviro responded to this diesel spill cleanup near Auburn in Pacific, WA, our work was cut out for us! First, we had to contain the spill from the leaky vehicle and quickly get to work to help prevent further damage to the area and an impacted storm drain.
Diesel Spill Cleanup Underway
The spill in the hotel parking lot spread to a storm drain and culvert, leading to a retention pond area. We first protected the storm drain, blocking more diesel from entering it. We had to use a vac trailer to clean it properly, as well as the culvert pipe leading from that drain to a retention pond. As part of a thorough spill recovery, we tested the contaminated soil from inside the retention pond and the pipe between the storm drain and culvert pipe.
For the pavement on the parking lot and roadways, we used waste absorbent granules and pads to suck up the diesel spill on the pavement and a sweeper to get things squeaky clean on this diesel spill cleanup.
Cleared by Public Works
For spill recovery jobs like these, we must file a formal report with the jurisdiction’s Public Works department. In this case, it was the City of Pacific Public Works and the Department of Ecology. This double-checking system ensures hazardous diesel spill cleanups are done properly and completely. Then, these agencies perform a site visit to ensure everything is good to go, as they did in this incident.
What Happens if Fuel Gets into a Storm Drain
Pro-Enviro attempts to protect storm drains from fuel and oil spills at all costs. These can cause severe environmental damage, contaminate water sources, harm aquatic life, and impact the drinking water supply.
In addition, failure to report and properly perform a spill recovery can result in massive fines, legal consequences and bigger remediation costs. If you have a leaky truck, you’ll be responsible for the cost of cleanup, which only goes up significantly if that cleanup includes a storm drain that leads to waterways. Thankfully, this one led to a retention pond which is more contained.
