2022-04-01: Revisited – Fuel Spill on April Fool’s Day

On April 1, 2022, Team Pro-Enviro responded to a call about a significant fuel spill. This was a serious accident involving a semi-truck and trailer and a bus, certainly no joke. When we arrived at the scene we discovered major damage to the fuel tank and a big mess to clean up. It was time to get to work.

Fuel Spill Recovery

First, we completed a comprehensive scene assessment to determine the best spill recovery plan. The first item on our list was containing the leak and stopping the spill. Once that was taken care of, we started with the spill cleanup.

Absorbents, including pads, were used to soak up the fuel and clear it off the road. Then we swept up the granular absorbents and disposed of that and the fuel-soaked pads. Afterwards, we cleaned the road to its original condition and ensured it was ready to be open to traffic again.

Team Pro-Tow Hauls the Casualties

Once the spill recovery was underway, our Pro-Tow heavy-duty towing and recovery division removed the truck and trailer from the scene. First, we had to detach the tractor from the trailer. Then, we could load and haul each individually to a secure storage yard. From there, we completed the required paperwork, reconditioned our vehicles and equipment and called it a job well done.

The Importance of Fast Fuel Spill Cleanup

Diesel fuel is a hazard to the environment and public safety. It can create risks for fires and traffic hazards and pollute the ecosystem. In addition, fuel spills can enter storm drains and contaminate waterways. Contaminants in groundwater can kill aquatic wildlife, and impact drinking water and sewage treatment plants.

If you fail to report and conduct a spill cleanup in a timely manner, you could be liable for fines and even charges. The more widespread the spill, the more expensive the recovery. It is not something you want to take your time on!
