On April 5, 2018, a semi-truck hauling a refrigerated trailer struck a concrete barrier and required a spill response in Kent, Washington. Unfortunately, it suffered fuel tank damage and made quite a mess in the northbound lane on the I-5. Team Pro-Enviro responded to the call.
Spill Response in Kent
When we arrived at the scene and started our assessment, we saw diesel fuel from the reefer truck spread across the roadway. First, we contained the spill from the damaged fuel tank. Containing the leak ensures no more fuel from the damaged fuel tank can contaminate the area. It’s essential when the vehicle is getting towed away. You don’t want a trail of diesel fuel following your tow truck!
Then we got to work on the spill cleanup. We used absorbents on the road to absorb the contaminants. Once absorbed, our Bobcat, outfitted with a sweeper, could sweep it up for disposal.
Dealing With Contaminated Soil
Unfortunately, the fuel spill extended into the soil and nearby ditch. That means our fuel response in Kent required us to test the soil. We can test the depth of the spill so we know how deep we need to dig it out to remove all hazardous material. Once we remove it, we dispose of it in compliance with state regulations. Then, new soil and sometimes gravel is placed on the site so it can quickly return to its original state.

Closing the Call
We could clear the call once the roadway and surrounding ditch were clean. Then, we returned all equipment to the shop and reconditioned it for another day of spill response in Kent!
The Importance of Quick Recovery for Reefer Trucks
If a reefer, or a truck hauling a refrigerated trailer, requires spill or accident recovery, it’s critical to do so quickly. If the cargo requires refrigeration, it’s likely perishable. If something happens to the refrigeration, that valuable and perishable cargo can be at risk of spoiling.
Typically, cargo includes expensive and temperature-sensitive materials like food, vaccines, medicine or other supplies. A lost load is costly, bad for business, and a transport company’s reputation. If your perishable cargo is compromised, contact Pro-Enviro for speedy spill response and recovery.
